10. Liability
10.1 South London Electrical Services maintains appropriate Public Liability Insurance and, where applicable, Professional Indemnity cover. Evidence of insurance can be provided upon reasonable request.
10.2 We shall exercise reasonable skill and care in carrying out all works in accordance with accepted industry standards, manufacturer guidance, and applicable regulations. However, electrical systems—particularly within existing or older properties—may contain latent defects that are not reasonably discoverable during visual inspection or standard testing.
10.3 We shall not be liable for:
- Pre-existing faults, deterioration, or unsafe conditions not caused by us.
- Hidden or latent defects in wiring, circuits, or building infrastructure that were not reasonably identifiable before work commenced.
- Failures arising from ageing infrastructure, historical installations, or non-compliant work carried out by third parties.
- Damage resulting from bringing an installation up to current safety standards where the original system was already defective or unsafe.
- Temporary loss of electricity supply or disruption reasonably required to complete the works safely.
- Any indirect or consequential loss, including (but not limited to) loss of business, revenue, data, or use of the premises.
- Delays, defects, or damage caused by third parties such as Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), utility providers, or other contractors.
- Failure or defect in client-supplied materials, fittings, or equipment.
- Damage arising where works are carried out following instructions given against our professional advice.
- Any installation that has been altered, modified, or interfered with after completion by persons other than us.
10.4 Where we connect to, extend, or modify an existing installation, our responsibility is limited strictly to the new work undertaken. We accept no liability for the integrity or compliance of the pre-existing system as a whole.
10.5 Investigative or fault-finding work may reveal further defects. We cannot guarantee that initial findings represent the full extent of issues within an installation.
10.6 To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total aggregate liability arising out of or in connection with the works shall be limited to the total amount paid for those specific works.
10.7 Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability for:
- Death or personal injury caused by negligence;
- Fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation;
- Any matter which cannot be excluded under the laws of England and Wales.
10.8 The Client is responsible for maintaining adequate insurance for their property, contents, and operations. Our insurance does not extend to cover consequential risks borne by the Client.
10.9 Unless expressly agreed in writing, we are not responsible for reinstating decorations, finishes, flooring, plasterwork, or other non-electrical elements disturbed as a necessary consequence of carrying out the works.
10.10 Any claim must be notified in writing within 14 days of the issue becoming apparent, allowing reasonable opportunity for inspection and remedy.
11. Guarantee & Warranty
11.1 We guarantee that all workmanship carried out by South London Electrical Services will be performed with reasonable skill, care, and in accordance with current regulations and recognised industry standards.
11.2 Our workmanship is guaranteed for 3 months from the date of completion (“the Guarantee Period”).
11.3 During the Guarantee Period, we will, at our discretion, return to rectify any fault proven to arise directly from our workmanship, at no additional labour cost.
11.4 This guarantee applies only to the specific works undertaken and does not extend to:
- Existing installations or components not installed or modified by us.
- General system performance of pre-existing electrical infrastructure.
- Fair wear and tear, ageing, or environmental deterioration.
- Damage caused by misuse, negligence, accidental damage, or unauthorised alteration.
- Overloading, lack of maintenance, or use outside intended design.
- External influences such as water ingress, building movement, pests, or structural defects.
11.5 Materials and equipment supplied are covered by the manufacturer’s warranty only. We do not provide additional product warranties but will reasonably assist with warranty information if required.
11.6 We do not guarantee compatibility or performance of:
- Client-supplied materials or fittings;
- Existing wiring or systems connected to new works;
- Third-party modifications made after our completion.
11.7 Any certification issued (EIC, Minor Works Certificate, EICR, etc.) reflects the condition of the installation at the time of testing only and does not guarantee future performance or durability.
11.8 This guarantee becomes void if:
- The installation is altered, extended, or repaired by others without our knowledge;
- The system is misused or not maintained appropriately;
- Payment for the works has not been made in full.
11.9 To make a claim under this guarantee, the Client must notify us in writing and allow reasonable access for inspection and remedial action. We must be given the opportunity to rectify the issue before third parties are instructed.
11.10 Our obligation under this guarantee is limited to repair or rectification of defective workmanship only. We shall not be liable for associated or consequential costs unless agreed in writing.
11.11 This guarantee is provided in addition to, and does not affect, the Client’s statutory rights under the laws of England and Wales.
